When I started my journey into coaching, I approached people to ask if I can coach them. I needed to clock in my coaching hours and at the same time, I’m able to apply what I learned to help people. These are people in my network. People that I know. Some of them are friends and some are acquaintances.
After a brief catching up, I told them what I’m doing now – which is coaching; and then I asked them “Would you be interested to be coached?”
Some of them would reply: “Sure, what do I need to do? Tell me more.”
But the others would say: “Wait, why would I need coaching? There’s nothing wrong with me.” Or “I don’t what coaching is and what it is for.” Or “Nah, that’s not for me… it’s only for rich people.”
Which, to be honest, made me feel a bit sad.
BUT that’s just the reality of it. And comparing the awareness and openness of people here in Asia to the western world such as U.S., Europe, and even Australia – I would say we are still behind.
Nothing wrong, just the way it is.
Because of this, I decided to educate people more on what coaching is, who it’s for, what are the benefits and does it work.
I hope this article can shed more light on coaching after you read it, specifically life coaching.
Let’s start.
What is life coaching?
We have a few different areas in our life, and the major ones would be our relationships, money or finance, career, personal development, and health. And in these areas, we would set our personal goals, whether we did it consciously or unconsciously. And sometimes, we get stuck… we find ourselves challenged to move in the direction of what we want. Sometimes we even find ourselves lost and confused.
For example, I had a client who was feeling overworked and depressed. He didn’t like what he was doing, which was a lot of sales presentations. He feels that that wasn’t his strength. And he also didn’t like his new boss. So, career-wise we explored him getting out of this rut and starting on his own.
Life coaching is just that – which is a safe space where a person can speak to someone about a specific area of their personal life, and talk about what’s getting them stuck now and what do they want to achieve. The sessions are client-led. And the coach’s main role is to guide the person into getting their answers. The coach facilitates the person’s transformation through the use of thoughtful questions and personalized processes and strategies. Ultimately life coaching allows you to maximize your potential in any area.
Going back to that client that I just mentioned, after our sessions and after he got to know what’s important to him – instead of starting on his own – he stayed in the same company, with the same job, and the same boss; but he moved to a different country and is now feeling much better, more positive, and more productive.
Who is life coaching for?
All kinds of people use life coaches, including actors, business leaders, creatives, entrepreneurs, executives, homemakers, managers, professionals, small business owners, and start-up pioneers.
Anyone who wants to do more tomorrow than they can do today should consider hiring a life coach. They can either be clear with what they want to achieve but they don’t know how. Or they just feel that they don’t want to be stuck in where they are now and want to have something better.
What are the benefits of life coaching?
Here are the top reasons for a client to work with a life coach:
- Identifying goals and defining a vision for success
- Identifying limiting beliefs
- Working toward financial independence
- Obtaining work/life balance
- Learning to communicate more succinctly and effectively
- Fostering more powerful connections in your personal and professional life
- Improving relationships and communication skills
- Getting promotions
- Achieving weight loss and/or fitness goals
- Managing an important life or business transition
- Articulating core values
Does coaching work?
The best way to show proof that coaching works is through other people’s experiences and what they say about it.
Here are a few:
“I was always looking forward to my coaching sessions because of my doubts and mixed emotions, after the coaching, it became clearer and I felt so good in terms of who I am. Thank you coach Jovan for your patience, understanding, and generosity of your time. Thank you for allowing me to feel new again. To make me feel how wonderful I am. I can see lots of possibilities now. You’re awesome!”
This is from Yolanda Bermas, and the area that she worked on is her personal development, specifically in better management of her emotional state.

“I engaged Jovan at a time of transition, wanting to move forward with my business idea. He’s been a huge support in terms of coaching and in my journey of starting my own business. I achieved breakthroughs in my thinking via the NLP exercises he did with me. He is a great listener, patiently hearing my stories and perceptively catching me at various junctures to highlight certain points to me. I highly recommend Jovan as a coach if you wish to push past your limitations to achieve your potential.”
This is from Sharon Tan, who is now a well sought out Cranio-sacral therapist in Singapore. We did business coaching when she was still in the ideation stage of her business.
